Graduate assistantships are unlike any other student employment on campus. Definitions and Job Codes: Below are brief definitions, job codes, and required dates of employment for graduate assistantships. Graduate Teaching Assistants are appointed in an academic department or program and a directly participates in the teaching mission of the unit as instructor of record, lab instructor, recitation leader, lab or lecture assistant, or who has responsibilities in direct support of classroom instruction in the unit, such as setting up labs or working in an instructional computer lab; or b provides general support to the teaching mission of the department or program.
Temporary appointees may be referred to as student workers.

This policy highlights the risks in sexual or romantic relationships in the Stanford workplace or academic setting between individuals in inherently unequal positions; prohibits certain relationships between teachers and students; and requires recusal from supervision and evaluation and notification in other relationships. Applies to all students, faculty, staff, and others who participate in Stanford programs and activities. Dating Your TA: Yay Or Nay?
The fundamental responsibilities of teaching include the instruction, evaluation, and advisement of students. While faculty members may sometimes receive assistance, through appropriate University channels, in carrying out these activities, the primary responsibility for ensuring they are carried out appropriately rests with the faculty. The appropriateness of faculty-student dating is being discussed on campuses throughout Westchester, echoing a nationwide debate about whether such relationships should be tolerated, regulated or banned altogether. Faculty members at the University of Virginia recently voted to prohibit sexual relationships between professors and the students they supervise.
A more stringent regulation, which would have banned romance between all professors and undergraduates, was voted down. A survey of Westchester colleges and universities revealed that no formal policies addressing faculty-student dating are in place, but many schools said that a prohibition against such relationships is implicit in other policies regulating professional conduct.
A Gray Area. But administrators, professors and students alike say that the issue of faculty-student dating is a complex one. Some say that the unequal power in a relationship between a student and a faculty member — particularly one who is in a position to grade or make recommendations about the student he or she is dating — is inherently exploitative. Others cite happy marriages of professors to their former students.

If there is a bias in what follows, it is towards smaller colleges and universities because in the smaller departments found in such institutions you are less likely to find peers who can advise you, and expectations based on your experience at Berkeley are likely to be less helpful as a guide. The difference between them is merely night and day. The other key distinction is between institutions that emphasize research and those which stress teaching.
Here, the differences can be more subtle, and are often very difficult to gauge. Visiting positions range from one semester to three years, and at times are renewable. Typically, visiting professors are hired to replace faculty on leave or to provide coverage in an area where the administration doesn’t want to commit a tenure slot. Often they must share an office, sometimes located in the basement or some other out of the way place, and lack access to computers and other resources.
You are also less likely to have control over which courses you teach and how you teach them. Given the heavy teaching demands, and especially if you have a lengthy commute, you may find it difficult to get much scholarly work done.
